Authorities say a man who was arrested in Holyoke experienced medical duress and died.
The Hampden District Attorney's Office says 29-year-old Daniel Allende, of Springfield, Massachusetts, was arrested early Saturday on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and possession of heroin.
They say he experienced medical duress while in custody Saturday morning.
They say members of the Holyoke Police and Fire Departments and emergency medical personnel performed CPR and used an automated external defibrillator.
Allende was transported to Holyoke Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the district attorney's office and the medical examiner are investigating.
Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni and Holyoke Police Chief Manny Febo extended condolences to Allende's family.
