Police in Salem, New Hampshire, are investigating a carjacking that happened over the weekend. Authorities are calling it a bold, brazen crime, and they say the suspect is still on the loose.

The victim was parking her car in front of a Michaels store when a stranger came out of the building and up to her window around 5 p.m. Saturday.

"The male asks her for a cigarette, she says she doesn't have any," said Salem Police Capt. Joel Dolan.

Dolan says the suspect showed the victim a gun, forced her into the passenger seat, took over the wheel, and headed south on Route 28.

"It's insane," said Michaels shopper Alysia Allen of Lawrence, Massachusetts.

"If I would've saw this earlier, I wouldn't be at Michaels," said another customer, Katie Arcand.

"I would be, like, so scared," said Michelle D'Arcangelo-Glynn, who was heading into Michaels Thursday with her daughter.

"It just makes me never want to leave my house because it's crazy," Arcand said.

The crime took a bizarre turn when police say the man allegedly told the victim that he had killed his sister and buried her body.

"I don't know the exact conversation, but she was definitely shaken up," Dolan said.

The captain says when the car got stuck in traffic, the victim jumped out, ran to Ted's Stateline Mobil in Methuen, Massachusetts, and called 911.

"I'm glad she was OK, glad she was able to get out," said Justin Brown of Haverhill, Massachusetts, who was waiting for his wife in the shopping plaza.

"I'm glad she had that reaction, because I don't know what I would've done," said D'Arcangelo-Glynn.

Police say they found the car dumped in Lawrence, but they're still searching for the suspect, who they say should be considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Salem Police.
