Thousands of Mainers are expected to celebrate a festival dedicated to the state's official treat: the whoopie pie.

This weekend marks the 10th Annual Whoopie Pie Festival, which features a whoopie pie eating contest and a judged competition for bakers to create their own concoctions.

As many as 8,000 people are expected to attend the festival in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine.

Jennifer Ellsey, from Tobey’s Grocery in South China, and Meghan Olcott, who owns Creamed Baking Co. in downtown Wiscasset, will each be making their Whoopie Pie Festival debut.

Both women have spent a few days this week preparing, getting to work as early as 3:30 a.m. to make thousands of whoopie pies. The bakers have created pies in all flavors, including German chocolate, chocolate turtle, maple, and pina colada.

“I’ve been making about 500 a day,” said Olcott, who said she planned to bring about 1,500 whoopie pies to the event.

Meanwhile, Ellsey plans to bring bite-sized whoopie pies with a maple filling.

“I don’t get sick of them,” she said of the repetitive baking process.

She only relents that she doesn’t actually like eating whoopie pies herself.

“I’m not a big fan, but my son and my significant other are big on sweets," she said.

The day begins with a 3K race/walk and continues into the afternoon with live music and crafts and food from more than 100 vendors.
