Ban on E-Cigarettes, Vaping Materials in Maine Schools to Begin

Health officials say the measure is needed "to protect our youth and continue efforts to educate parents, school personnel, students and athletes about this risk"

Maine school buildings are about to add e-cigarettes and vaping materials to the list of banned products in their buildings.

The change is the result of an update to an existing state law that takes hold on Thursday. Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention director Nirav Shah says the measure is needed "to protect our youth and continue efforts to educate parents, school personnel, students and athletes about this risk."

Maine CDC says it's also working closely with health care providers and federal officials to monitor for potential cases of a lung illness associated with vaping. The illness has caused seven deaths in six states and nearly 400 hospitalizations in 36 states. Maine CDC says there are no confirmed cases of the illness in Maine.
