FIRST ALERT: Battering Winds to Continue, Showers Moving Out of Region

What was a fast-moving band of torrential rain and damaging wind has advanced to central and northern New England and is now slowing and weakening for the rest of the day.

Low pressure intensified rapidly as it moved across Connecticut in the predawn hours but now, it has been cut off at all levels of the atmosphere. That means it will slow down and slowly spin in place for a few hours before creeping across the state of Maine Thursday night and Friday as it loses its intensity.

North of the low-pressure center Thursday morning, we have damaging winds from the east and southeast across much of Maine, northern New Hampshire and in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. On the west and south side of the storm center, we have wind increasing from the southwest, perhaps with another round of damage and scattered power outages, even where the sun has come out.

We are mostly dry in southern New England Thursday, with a few hours of sunshine before the clouds come back in with afternoon showers. Wind from the southwest will be gusting past 50 mph.

Rain remains heavy in the state of Maine, and showers are mixing with snow in the higher elevations of northern New Hampshire and in much of Vermont, perhaps even the Berkshires may get some snow Thursday. Temperatures are mostly in the 40s and 50s.

The low-pressure center slowly moves out of the picture Friday, but we still have quite a breezy day with sun and clouds. Temperatures are starting off in the 30s and 40s, topping out near 60 degrees in western and southern New England.

High pressure from Canada moves in on Saturday, with light wind and sunshine. High temperature will be in the lower 60s south, and 50s north.

Sunday should be OK, but we’re watching for potential tropical cyclone development in the Gulf of Mexico. If it happens, it may get caught up in the jet-stream and race northeast close to our south coast by late Sunday. As long as that stays south, we should have another nice day, with temperatures rebounding into the 60s Sunday.

We are likely in the warmer breeze from the southwest for Monday, with a good amount of sunshine temperatures back in the 60s. Then, another major front may move into the region on Tuesday, with the threat for some potentially heavy rain and maybe thunderstorms as it turns warmer and more humid with a high temperature in the 60s near 70 degrees.

It’s a very busy pattern here in our First Alert 10-Day Forecast.
