Mother Bear, Cubs Removed From Den in Highway Median

Massachusetts State Police say a family of bears made their den in the median of Route 2 near Templeton

A family of bears was removed from their den in the median of a busy Massachusetts highway for their own safety and for the safety of motorists on Thursday morning.

State police said the westbound and eastbound lanes of Route 2 were temporarily shut down at exits 19 and 20 in Templeton around 10 a.m. to allow state environmental police and wildlife officials to relocate the family of bears.

The mother bear was tranquilized and she and her cubs were moved to a safer location in a nearby state forest.

"Everything went beary well," state police said on Twitter.

Traffic on Route 2 has reopened. The four-lane highway was shut down for about 45 minutes.
