Bernardston, Mass. Man's Child Rape Trial to Start in January

The suspect's attorney said his client did not know the teenager was underage

A Massachusetts man charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl he met on a chat website is scheduled to go in trial in January.

The Recorder reports that 27-year-old Raymond Phelps, of Bernardston, faces charges of rape of a child and enticement of a child under the age of 16 in Middlesex Superior Court starting Jan. 8.

Prosecutors say after meeting the girl earlier this year, the pair went to a movie and then had sex in his pickup truck down the street from her home.

Phelps pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in February and was freed on bail with GPS monitoring.

Phelps' attorney says his client had no idea the girl was underage and all sexual contact was consensual.
