Sen. Bernie Sanders is recovering well and "looking forward' to the upcoming Democratic presidential debate after being hospitalized because of a blocked artery in his heart, his wife said Thursday.

The 78-year-old Vermont senator was hospitalized in Las Vegas on Tuesday after he experienced chest discomfort during a campaign event and sought medical evaluation. Two stents were "successfully inserted," his campaign said.

"Bernie is up and about," Jane Sanders said in a statement. "Yesterday, he spent much of the day talking with staff about policies, cracking jokes with the nurses and doctors, and speaking with his family on the phone. His doctors are pleased with his progress and there has been no need for any additional procedures."

His wife said she expected Sanders to be discharged before the end of the weekend and headed back to Vermont to rest.

"He'll take a few days to rest, but he's ready to get back out there and is looking forward to the October debate," Jane wrote.

Beyond the debate Oct. 15 in Westerville, Ohio, it was not clear when Sanders will resume campaigning.
