Bicyclist Struck, Killed by MBTA Commuter Rail Train in Somerville

Transit Police and the Middlesex District Attorney's Office are handling the investigation

A bicyclist was struck and killed Sunday by an MBTA Commuter Rail train in Somerville, according to Transit Police.

Officers responded to the scene at Park Street at 1:30 p.m. where the bicyclist was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicated that the bicyclist, a man between 25 to 30 years of age, went through fully fully functioning gates, which were in the down position for an approaching outbound train. As the bicyclist continued, he was struck by the train.

Transit Police and the Middlesex District Attorney's Office are handling the investigation.

The incident forced the MBTA to shut down service on the Fitchburg line between Porter Square and North Station for a couple of hours. According to MBTA Alerts, the next inbound train was expected to depart Fitchburg at 6:18 p.m.
