Get Ready For Bursting Pipes and Ice Dams

It’s been incredibly cold. Before the snow arrived, the City of Boston stayed below 20 degrees for six consecutive days. That’s the longest stretch in recorded history.

If the current forecast verifies, Boston will be tied for the fifth longest stretch below freezing. Although it has been very cold, temperatures during this stretch have not dropped below zero. Currently, the forecast low in Boston is -3°. Not only would it be the first time dropping below zero this season, it would break the record low for January 7th (which was -2° set in the late 1800s).

Warmer times are ahead. High temperatures on Sunday will climb out of the teens and into the 20s. You’ll also notice that there won’t be as much wind. Clouds will begin to increase during the afternoon and evening.

Monday, a few snow showers are possible with a warm front. Temperatures during the afternoon will climb above freezing. The warm up continues through the remainder of the week. By Thursday and Friday, high temperatures could reach 50°. Hitting the 50s is not uncommon during the winter, but it will be the first 50°+ temperature since December 19th. Get ready for bursting pipes and ice dams – ‘tis the season.

Our next storm system (Thursday into Friday) will bring rain. It’s possible that we could see over an inch of rain. With ice on the rivers, it’s possible that there could be some flooding.
