Police in Auburn, New Hampshire, are investigating after a gruesome discovery at a Waste Management transfer station.

Authorities say a body was found on Monday morning in a pile of trash.

"Stuff like that doesn't happen around here," said Amanda Maxwell, who lives nearby. "It is kind of shocking."

Details are limited, but a law enforcement source tells NBC10 Boston that the body of an adult male was discovered in the process of moving trash around the facility.

Town leaders say trash trucks from Manchester drop off at this location. According to the town website, there's also a drop-off site that's free for Auburn residents.

"There are dumpsters," said Maxwell. "You can put trash bags in one, wood furniture in another, you go around in a circle and dump whatever you have."

Auburn Police cruisers blocked the entrance of the facility all day Monday while investigators went in and out of the gates.

State police and the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office will work to identify the body and figure out when and how the person died. It's still unclear how he ended up at the transfer station, but people familiar with the facility say it's hard to believe anyone would choose this spot to dispose of a dead body.

"You're out in the open. Anyone would see you if you tried to do that," Maxwell said.

In a statement, Waste Management said the company is cooperating with the investigation.
