Maine Game Wardens have recovered the body of a teenager who drowned in the Saco River.

Wardens say they found 17-year-old Steel Crawford, of Freeport, in about 50 feet of water Friday evening. Witnesses said Crawford let go of a rope swing and landed awkwardly in the water hours earlier. They said he never resurfaced.

Wardens said Crawford and friends were swimming at Pleasant Point Park in Buxton, and his body was recovered down river from where he was last seen.

Freeport High School Principal Jen Gulko called Steel, a rising senior, a "beloved member of our school family'' who was passionate about athletics. She said he was a member of the varsity lacrosse team and hoped to continue playing in college.
