Hometown Hero Charlie Coyle, Family, Give Back to Weymouth Community

The hockey star's family have been active in giving back to the Weymouth, Massachusetts community and he has also participated in paying it forward

The streets of Weymouth, Massachusetts are filled with pride for hometown hero Charlie Coyle. While the Boston Bruins center is making a difference on the ice, some of his family members are making a difference in the community.

His aunt Annmarie Coyle has helped run the Weymouth Food Pantry for 13 years. She said her nephew, now number 13 for the Bruins, has returned to give back at many of their events.

"That's just the way the family is," she said. "Anytime anyone needs help in the community or needs someone, the Coyles are there."

The pantry helps feed more than 250 families a week and Coyle’s cousins also volunteer. This month, they are wearing black and gold as they pack up the food. They even have Bruins nametags.

"Seeing him on the Bruins, it’s like wow, this is real," Kevin Coyle said, who plays hockey at Weymouth High School just like his cousin did.

The Coyle pride goes beyond his extended family at the pantry. There are signs up at local businesses and schools. The True North Kitchen and Bar in Weymouth even named a drink after Coyle called "The Lucky 13." It is available all season long.

"We just can't get enough of it," Annmarie Coyle said. "People don’t understand what these games are like for us. Yes, it’s the Bruins, but it’s Charlie."

Those who work at the food pantry are hopeful he will be able to make an appearance at their fundraising 5K later this month, but understand if he might be busy celebrating. He has donated plenty of raffle items for the event happening, which is scheduled to take place June 15 at Wompatuck State Park in Hingham.

Annmarie Coyle said win or lose, the community can be sure Charlie Coyle will be back to give back.

"It doesn't get better than him because he’s a better person than he is a hockey player and he's a pretty darn good hockey player," she said.
