Leicester Residents Concerned With Pot Shop Traffic

Residents in Leicester, Massachusetts say they are frustrated with the influx of traffic less than a week after the opening of one of the state's recreational pot shops.

Less than a week after Massachusetts opened the first two recreational marijuana shops, Mayor Marty Walsh says he's concerned about Boston opening its first pot shop next year.

According to a document obtained by the Boston Herald, an agreement was reached Wednesday between the city of Boston and Ascend Mass LLC.

Walsh told the Herald that officials are working on a five-step process with the company before they will be allowed to seek a Zoning Board of Appeals approval as well as approval from the state.

The proposed pot shop is looking to open on Friend Street in the city's West End, according to the Herald.

When asked about the prospect of new revenue for the city, Walsh told the paper, "I hope taxation's worth the human toll."

Recreational marijuana sales started last week at two shops, New England Treatment Access in Northampton and Cultivate in Leicester, making Massachusetts the first East Coast state to allow it. Voters approved of the change in 2016.
