Walsh Seeks $1,500 Fines for Snow-Related Offenses

The maximum snow related fine allowed in Massachusetts is $300 and Walsh wants that to jump to $1,500

Boston residents could soon face major fines for not properly clearing their sidewalks after a winter storm.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh filed a home rule petition to the Massachusetts state Legislature to raise the amount of fines that people can get for snow infractions, both residential and commercial.

The maximum snow related fine allowed in Massachusetts is $300 and Walsh wants that to jump to $1,500 for offenses like throwing snow into a road and not clearing off sidewalks.

If the fines go unpaid, they would simply be added to a person’s property tax bill.

If the Legislature approves this increase, Walsh will then file for an ordinance updating the cities snow fine structure.

Crews in Boston began removing space savers Monday in an effort to improve the snow cleanup process.
