Boston Has America's Most Expensive ZIP Code for Renters, Analysis Finds

The average rent for a one bedroom in Fenway Park's ZIP code would set you back over $60,000 over a year

Boston is known for its victorious sports teams, but this might be one title that isn't worth the bragging rights.

The ZIP code that includes the Fenway is the most expensive for renters in the country, according to an analysis by Apartment Guide, towering above mainstays like New York and Los Angeles.

One-bedroom apartments average a little over $5,000 in rent in the ZIP code of 02215, which stretches along the Charles River from Packard's Corner to Massachusetts Avenue and includes Fenway Park and part of the Longwood Medical Center, according to the analysis.

That would set renters back more than $60,000 a year, multiplying the monthly $5,034 rent that Apartment Guide found by 12 months.

The analysis, published last week, crunched the numbers on rental property inventory on Apartment Guide and Rent.com.

The over $5,000 average rent in the 02215 ZIP code is up 11% from last year, Apartment Guide said. It's also much higher than Boston's overall median rent, which CNBC reported in March is $1,541, citing a different company's analysis.

If it’s any consolation, no other New England ZIP codes cracked the list's top 10, while California claims five of the spots. Philadelphia and San Jose had the No. 2 and 3 spots, respectively.

In the top 20 were Needham's 02494 ZIP code and 02127, which encompasses South Boston, Andrew Square, Telegraph Hill and City Point.
