Boston Murder Suspect in Custody After Hours-Long Stand-Off in Walpole

A Boston murder suspect is in custody after an hours-long stand-off in Walpole, Massachusetts that started late Tuesday night and extended overnight.

A spokesperson for the Suffolk County District Attorney's office said police had been watching Kyle Williams-Gathers, 32, because he was wanted in connection with the homicide of Shaquille Browder in Dorchester Jan. 12. Browder was allegedly shot in the parking lot of a Burger King.

When officers tried to make contact with Williams-Gathers at the Hilltop Drive apartment, where Walpole police said an ex-girlfriend lives, he allegedly would not come out and ultimately barricaded himself inside. The ex-girlfriend managed to get out safely.

Crisis negotiators and family members contacted Williams-Gathers in an effort to get him to surrender.

The suspects' mother, Cassandra, arrived at the scene, concerned at the use of force and adamant her son was on the right track.

"He changed his life around, he has children, he has brothers and sisters that love him," she said. "He’s been working... this right here is unacceptable."

After three to four hours, police said Williams surrendered.

"It was a very good resolution, best resolution that could have happened, you know? There is no property damage, everybody is safe, the police officers are safe so the neighborhood can resume back to the way it was," Walpole Police Chief John Carmichael said.

In a statement from the Boston Police Department, Commissioner William Evans wrote "this brazen daytime shooting was very troubling. The efforts of my homicide investigators and prosecutors from the District Attorney's office led to the quick identification of the person responsible for Shaquille's death. I commend the efforts, patience and professionalism of all those involved in the arrest this morning in Walpole. We will not rest until every homicide is solved."

No injuries were reported during the incident.

Williams-Gathers is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on Wednesday on unknown charges. It's unclear if he has an attorney.
