Boy, 12, Arrested After Crashing Stolen Car in Waterbury: Police

A 12-year-old boy was arrested after driving a stolen car and crashing through a fence and down an embankment in Waterbury, police said.

The boy was driving a stolen 1999 Buick Century in the westbound direction on Hillside Avenue when he lost control as he swerved between two parked cars, according to Waterbury police. He crashed through an 8-foot-high fence and veered down an embankment, knocking down 20 feet of fencing in the process, police said.

He got out of the car and walked away, returning to the crash site and was looking around as police were investigating and doing a report on the accident, police said. An officer noticed he matched the suspect's description and detained him.

A witness identified the boy as the driver.

The car had been stolen while it was running in front of 208 Willow Street.

Police charged him with third-degree larceny, second-degree criminal mischief, operating without a license and evading responsibility.

The boy was transported to Bridgeport corrections.
