SURVEILLANCE VIDEO: Man Attempts to Kidnap, Assault Jogger

A man is facing charges after allegedly sexually assaulting a female jogger in Bridgewater, Massachusetts and attempting to abduct her.

Police responded to Pleasant Street shortly after 7:30 a.m. on Sunday after receiving multiple reports of a woman who had been assaulted.

Police said the 37-year-old woman was running on Pleasant Street when a man driving an SUV pulled over in front of her.

Shocking surveillance video caught a man — whom police later identified as Gordon Lyons, 57, of Bridgewater — allegedly getting out of an orange Hyundai, grabbing her and trying to push her into his car. Police said Lyons also sexually assaulted the woman.

According to police, the woman fought back, causing Lyons to run back to his car. The woman apparently took a photo of Lyons' car as he drove away, which she showed police.

"Even though she had been running for a few miles and had to fight off an assailant, she also had the presence of mind to take a picture to help law enforcement, to help us actually catch the perpetrator," Bridgewater Police Chief Christopher Delmonte said.

"This is anything but a victim," Delmonte added. "This young woman is very courageous, very independent, and she fought back. She wasn't going to be a victim in this case and I'm very proud of her for her actions."

A driver who was passing by and a resident in a nearby home also witnessed the attack and called police.

"I saw her and this guy got out of the car and he was grabbing her and trying to put her in the car," said Donald Prohovich, who saw the commotion from his driveway and went over to try to help.

"They were both on the ground, she was struggling to get away and she finally got away and then he got up because he saw me," he added.

Surveillance footage showed Lyons running back into his car and driving off at a high rate of speed, narrowly missing a nearby fence. A Good Samaritan tried to follow the car but lost him on Route 24.

According to police, Lyons didn't get far, crashing his car a short time later while driving on Route 24. He was injured in the crash and taken to a hospital, where he remains in police custody.

Lyons is being held without bail pending his arraignment on kidnapping and indecent assault and battery charges. It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
