Bright and Brisk Weekend

High pressure from Canada will keep us bright and brisk into next week

It’s been a rather odd winter to say the least. We were off to a very cold and snowy start in November. Then it warmed up and turned mostly wet for Christmas and New Year’s.

Most of January has been in a thaw so far in Boston, where we have had nearly no snow so far.

Meanwhile in northern New England we saw two to three feet of snow this week, and snowfall is well above normal for the winter in northern Maine. The snow has been coming to the north even though temperatures were above average for the last three weeks.

Now the jetstream is coming in from Canada and a snow storm is missing us to the south. Traffic snarled last evening in St. Louis as the snow piled up 1-2 inches per hour, and snow continues Saturday in Missouri, spreading to the middle Atlantic states.

Here in New England, high pressure from Canada will keep us bright and brisk into next week.

Under partly to mostly sunny skies, the high temperature today will be in the teens north and 20s south. The best news is that wind has decreased; it is now from the northwest 10 to 15 mph.

Underneath the center of the high-pressure system Saturday night, we will experience radiational cooling. That is, with a clear sky and calm dry air, radiational cooling allows temperatures to get down to 25 degrees below zero in the far north where we have deep snow, to the single numbers in southern New England, even though there is bare ground.

There will be sunshine once again Sunday with a high temperature in the single numbers to teens north, and 20s south. With a fairly light wind and a mixture of sun and clouds at the Patriots game with a high temperature of about 28 degrees.

We are a bit less cold Monday and Tuesday with highs in the 30s. Parts of southern New England reach 40°+ on Wednesday before a new cold front from Canada comes in with a few snow showers and much colder air returning Thursday and Friday.

Next weekend is the next potential storm system, it looks like a messy front arrives with snow, ice, and rain possibly developing Friday night and continuing much of the weekend. It’s impossible to say how significant the storm is, but it looks like the following week may be some of the coldest air since the beginning of January 2018.
