Burlington, Vt. Police ID Man Killed in Daytime Shooting

One man is dead and another injured following an exchange of gunfire in Burlington, Vermont, on Tuesday, according to police.

Benzell Hampton, 23, was shot and killed at approximately 2:45 p.m. in the driveway of 227 North Willard St.. Hampton was shot in the head during an exchange of gunfire with another man who is alleged to have attacked him. That man was shot multiple times by Hampton and was admitted to UVM Medical Center for treatment where he is expected to survive his gunshot wounds.

Hampton has arrest records in Vermont, Florida and Georgia, including a concealed weapons charge. A quantity of crack cocaine was recovered from Hampton's body after his death, according to police.

Burlington police are investigating the incident and have interviewed several witnesses. The motive appears to be narcotics-related at this time.
