Busy Weekend Could Cause Traffic Mess in Hartford

Hartford police are reminding people that it will be a very busy weekend in the city.

Traffic congestion is expected to be extreme on Saturday as Hartford hosts several events all in the same area.

Visitors will be jamming the city Saturday for the Wiz Khalifa concert at the Xfinity Theatre, Connecticon at the Connecticut Convention Center, the Yard Goats game at Dunkin' Donuts Park, the Hartford Athletic game at Dillon Stadium, Cirque du Soleil -Luzia on Market Street, a food truck festival, and the RiverFest fireworks show.

"We want to see our venues packed with people because we they’re stopping at restaurants and bars and staying," explained Michael Zeleski, president and CEO of Riverfront Recapture.

Police said they expect those events to draw as many as 65,000 people into Hartford on Saturday from morning through midnight.

Police are urging people to arrive early and plan for a lot of traffic Saturday night.

"I need everybody to be patient," said Lt. Anthony Pia of the Hartford Police Traffic Division. "You will be in traffic. We have officers at all the major intersections so we’ll get you through."

There will be between 280 to 300 officers working throughout the day - a busy day rivaled only by the Hartford Marathon.

For those attending the Wiz Khalifa show, police are asking drivers to use Exit 33 off of I-91 to get to the Xfinity Theatre.  For the Hartford Athletic game, police are asking fans to use Exit 27 off of I-91.
