Voters in a Cape Cod town are considering a conservation restriction on the last private island in Pleasant Bay.
The town of Orleans is proposing to buy a $1.5 million conservation restriction to preserve Sipson Island in perpetuity for a private benefactor. The Cape Cod Times reports the Community Preservation Committee Chairman approved the restriction plan and a plan to purchase a parcel on Lonnie's Pond Thursday.
The island is one of the three largest unprotected tracts in the town. The committee has approved Orleans spending community preservation funds on the conservation restriction, which would stop development on the entire island.
Voters will make a final decision during the annual spring town meeting.
