A Maine teenager is facing charges after police say he posted a message on social media that was interpreted as a threat, prompting school officials in Cape Elizabeth to cancel classes Monday.

WCSH-TV reports the 17-year-old Cape Elizabeth High School student was arrested in South Portland at an apartment building on Minot Street. The student, who has not been identified because he is a juvenile, was charged with misdemeanor terrorizing, according to the Press Herald.

Police declined to released the exact nature of the threat but told the Press Herald "it was such that you could construe it to think firearms."

The investigation began Sunday night when the school principal was allegedly tipped off by other students who saw a social media post.

In a Facebook post and email to parents, school officials said they were canceling classes at all schools "out of an abundance of caution."
