2 Killed, 7 Others Injured After Car Crashes Into Pizza Shop in Newton, Massachusetts

The restaurant was open at the time, and several customers were among the injured

Two people are dead after a car crashed into Sweet Tomatoes Pizza in West Newton, Massachusetts, Tuesday night, authorities said.

Seven others were transported to area hospitals. Three are listed in serious condition.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan says the driver of the car is alive. The accident occurred around 6 p.m. at 1279 Washington St. and remains an active and open investigation. 

Newton-Wellesley Hospital confirms they received four of the patients. The driver and a male customer are listed in fair condition. Two women, a customer and an employee, are in fair condition. A Newton firefighter was also transported there for an injury, but has since been treated and released. 

The hospital has also confirmed that the driver, as well as a female customer, are expected to be released on Tuesday night.

Massachusetts State Police sent crime scene services and an accident reconstruction team to the scene. The car remained inside the establishment for hours before it was finally removed around 10:30 p.m.

The restaurant was open at the time of the accident. Ryan says all of the employees have been accounted for. 

Heather Swett, who works nearby at Elements Massage, described the accident scene to necn.

"They went all the way back into the restaurant where the oven is and the oven had collapsed onto the vehicle," she said.

Newton Mayor Setti Warren responded to the scene of the crash and described it as a "very tragic event."
