Police have arrested a man who allegedly accosted a woman and her son in South Boston on Monday.

Wilfin Medina, 29, was arrested and booked on charges of assault and battery, breach of the peace, and the attempt to commit a crime.

Massachusetts State Police troopers responded around 3:25 p.m. for a report of an attempted abduction of a child near the Castle Island bathrooms.

The officers spoke to a woman who reported that a man she didn't know approached members of her family and was behaving erratically. She told police the man was making bizarre and non-sensical statements.

The woman, who has not been identified, said in her statement that she asked the man to leave but he did not and then allegedly grabbed the arm of her 12-year-old son.

She says she pushed the man away and told him not to touch her son.

The suspect then reportedly walked away in the direction of a nearby playground.

A state trooper who responded was able to locate a man matching the suspect’s description. The man had a large rock in his hand when the trooper approached him and claimed to know the woman and boy he had reportedly accosted. The suspect was placed into a police cruiser, and the woman then positively identified him, leading to his arrest.

Medina is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in South Boston district court. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer.
