Nearly three dozen cats are looking for homes after their owner recently died in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

Officials with the MSCPA said teams from their Boston and Methuen shelters rescued the 31 "under-socialized" cats Wednesday. The home where the cats were found was said to be "messy".

The cats are suffering from upper respiratory and ear infections as well as dental issues.

Medical bills for the cats could reach up to $15,000. Donations towards medical care can be made on the MSPCA's Angels for Animals Fund.

Ten of the cats were taken to the MSPCA Boston adoption center and 10 were taken to MSPCA Nevins Farm in Methuen. Eleven were taken by the Ahimsa Haven Animal Rescue in Templeton.

MSPCA officials said the surrender comes on the heels of two other major cat surrenders in the last five weeks which have swelled the MSPCA's cat population to 52.

Anyone interested in adopting the cats can email methuenadoptions@mspca.org.
