Champions in Action: Bookstore Empowering Teens

For its continued investment in the future of Massachusetts' young people, NECN and Citizens Bank have selected More Than Words as this quarter's Champions in Action.

The future is bright for teens working at More Than Words Bookstore and Warehouse.

More Than Words empowers teens, ages 16 through 21, who are in foster care, court systems, homeless or out of school. The bookstore wants these young adults to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business.

The bookstore began in 2004 as an online book-selling program. A year later, it grew into a bookstore cafe on Moody Street in Waltham, Massachusetts, and then a warehouse bookstore in Boston.

Working 20 to 30 hours per week for minimum wage, teens handle all aspects of the business. Their secondary "you job" focuses on life after More Than Words, including going back to school, graduating and landing a successful job in their community.

For its continued investment in the future of Massachusetts' young people, NECN and Citizens Bank have selected More Than Words as this quarter's Champions in Action.
