Child Airlifted After School Van Crashes in Lowell

A child was airlifted to a Boston hospital Tuesday after a school van crashed in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Police confirm a school van and an SUV collided around 3:30 p.m. on Bridge Street near 12th Street.

Three students were in the van, which fire officials say came from McAuliffe Elementary School. One child was injured and taken by helicopter to a hospital in Boston. The other two were shaken up.

The drivers of both vehicles were taken to Lowell General Hospital with head injuries. The school van's driver had to be freed from the vehicle using the Jaws of Life.

George Garcia ran out to help seconds after the crash.

"I heard the bang. It was loud, like a bomb went off," Garcia said.
