Officials ID 4-Year-Old Torrington Drowning Victim

A 4-year-old New York boy died after being pulled from Burr Pond in Torrington on Sunday afternoon and officials have identified him as Edison Batista.

Crews responded to a report of an unconscious child around 4:45 p.m. on Sunday and Edison, who was from the Bronx, New York, was transported to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, according to Department of Energy and Environmental Protection officials.

He had been swimming in a roped off area with other children and adults when lifeguards noticed he needed help.

State Environmental Police Sgt. Keith Williams said lifeguards tried to save Edison after they pulled him from the water, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital at 6:31 p.m.

Edison would have turned 5 on July 30.

It is unclear whether he was wearing any kind of flotation device.

State EnCon police are investigating.
