11-Year-Old Boy Shot in Abington, Massachusetts

Boy is in stable condition at Boston hospital

An 11-year-old boy was accidentally shot in Abington, Massachusetts, Wednesday afternoon, the district attorney's office confirmed.

Plymouth district attorney Timothy Cruz said two boys, both 11, were playing together at a home on Linwood Street at 3:21 p.m. when one of them was accidentally shot in the face.

The handgun in the shooting was legal, according to Cruz.

Aerial footage showed law enforcement officials outside and around the home after the incident.

The boy was taken to South Shore Hospital in Weymouth then flown to a Boston hospital where he is currently in stable condition.

"We believe he's doing OK right now but any gunshot wound is dangerous and our thoughts and prayers go out to that little boy's safety," said Cruz. "That's number one right now."

Beverly McAuliffe lives next door and said she didn't hear the shooting but knows the family.

"They're a nice family and they do a lot with their children," she said. "I feel sick. I don't think it should have happened."

Abington's police chief admitted it was a difficult call for his officers.

"It's certainly a tragic issue," said Chief David Majenski. "Officers will receive after care and counseling as a result."

Abington Public School Superintendent Peter Schafer released a statement Wednesday night that read, "

Tonight's news of a Woodsdale student suffering a gunshot wound in their neighborhood afterschool is heartbreaking and sad. Our sincerest thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. The Abington Public Schools will be providing counseling services to students in need. We are also available to families wanting more information about how to talk to their children about this tragic event."

Police are still investigating exactly how the child was shot.
