ID of Boy Killed by Train in Salem, Mass. Released

A child was struck and killed by a train Friday in Salem, Massachusetts.

Transit police and the Essex County District Attorney's Office confirm the victim, 10-year-old Jaydon Dancy, died after being hit by an MBTA Commuter Rail train.

The crash happened near Castle Hill along the Newburyport/Rockport line, in the vicinity of 40 Lawrence Street, at about 8 p.m.

According to witnesses, the boy had been with a group of friends at a nearby park and was crossing the tracks to retrieve his bicycle when he was struck.

"There are no adequate words to aptly convey the utter tragic event this is," MBTA Transit Police said in a statement. "TPD detectives along with representatives of the Essex County DA's Office are actively investigating the facts and circumstances."

The superintendent of Salem Public Schools, Margarita Ruiz, issued a statement on Saturday.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to Jaydon’s parents and his siblings during this difficult time," said Ruiz.

"Jaydon was a bright, inquisitive 5th grader at the Carlton Innovation School. Our entire school community and city mourn the loss of this child. We will have grief counselors at the Carlton School on Sunday from 6 - 8 p.m. to support children and their families. And we will be providing additional counselors at the Carlton School and other schools starting Monday to provide additional resources and supports to our students, staff and families.”

Authorities said the incident believes to be a tragic accident and no foul play is suspected.

"This is an unspeakable loss for his family, his friends and the community," District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said. "Words cannot properly express the magnitude of this tragedy. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends."
