Girl Riding Bicycle Struck by Vehicle in Essex: Police

The 12-year-old, who was struck by a Ford Edge on Howard Street, is expected to be OK

A child riding a bicycle was hospitalized Thursday after being struck by a driver in Essex, Massachusetts, according to police.

The 12-year-old girl was hit by a Ford Edge just before 3 p.m. on Howard Street, police said.

The girl was taken to Beverly Hospital, then airlifted to a Boston hospital, where she is expected to be OK.

The seventh-grader's friends said she was crossing the road from her house to the sidewalk when she was struck.

"Well the first thing I heard was that she was dead, so I started crying but like, then I heard from her mom, she said that she is fine, but she is like going into surgery and everything. It made me a little bit better," best friend Victoria Conde said.

The driver, who has not been identified, did not receive a citation and is cooperating with the investigation, according to police.
