Midnight basketball is returning to Providence, Rhode Island, for the first time in 15 years.
Mayor Jorge Elorza says the program is supposed to give young people safe, positive and productive opportunities with the goal of directing them away from gangs and violence over the summer when they have more free time.
The announcement comes after two killings over the weekend.
The basketball leagues will be held Tuesday and Thursday nights beginning July 7. They'll be held at Bucklin Park, Davis Park, Davey Lopes Recreation Center and Gano Park. Players must pay $25 to play and games start at 9 p.m.
The general manager for the Providence Sky Chiefs says the summer league MVP will receive an invitation to open tryouts for the team.
Registration starts May 28 and ends June 26.
