City Year Launches for Another Year

Young adults from around the country started their year of service in South Boston Saturday

Saturday is a very special day for members of City Year, a group of dedicated adults from around the country who are helping to improve the community.

The opening day ceremonies for City Year, a branch of the AmeriCorps, was held at the Condon Elementary School in South Boston. The program started in Boston 26 years ago and today there are 27 AmeriCorps members in 25 U.S. cities.

Red Jacket Weekend began with a rush. The group of 165 enthusiastic adults began their year of service by painting inside the Condon Elementary School and putting together teacher resource packages.

" I feel it's important because I know that throughout my educational career, I've had people mentor me and guide me in my path to be here and make a service to my community," said City Year member Dorymar Marq.

Comcast/NBC Universal sponsored the event.
