Civil War-Era Signature Book Sells for $55K

An album containing more than 200 Civil War-era signatures - including those from Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Abraham Lincoln, Brigham Young and Kit Carson - has been sold in Maine to a southern New England collector for $55,000.

The Sun Journal reports
appraiser Daniel Buck Soules sold the 122-page album at an auction on Saturday at his Lisbon Falls gallery.

Soules says he and his partners spent weeks verifying the signatures for authenticity. He previously said the signatures were collected by William Kettles, a White House telegraph operator who was also the first person to receive news that Richmond had fallen in April 1865.

The album also contained tickets to President Andrew Johnson's 1868 impeachment hearing.
