Today's sunshine has been accompanied by more chilly air — some 8 to 10 degrees below normal for the date — as snow flies across the Appalachian and Mid-Atlantic states to our south.

Clouds will gradually increase Monday afternoon and evening, thickening overnight Monday and sticking around Tuesday. Although some rain and snow showers will fall Tuesday afternoon, it's all expected to be light and result in little more than briefly wet roads before moving on and paving the way for slightly milder conditions Wednesday when high temperatures should reach 50 degrees.

The gradual warming trend should continue Thursday, though may be marred by some returning showers with another atmospheric disturbance. Each disturbance that moves across the region will drag a persistent and sluggish front north and south, wavering over the end of the week into next weekend.

To the south of the front, warmth will shoot temperatures into the 60s, while north of it, highs will hold in the 40s, so placement of the front is key to the temperature forecast. We're expecting warmth for most of central and southern New England Friday and Saturday.

A rainstorm is in the making for Sunday into Monday, with the million dollar question being how long the rain lingers Monday.

Though the trend in the last few days has been to keep rain going through the Boston Marathon, it's still early and several days out, so we'll keep an eye on that very important part of the forecast.
