Rescue crews have called off their search for two people who reportedly went missing while kayaking on the Saco River after the kayakers reported they were safe.
The U.S. Coast Guard says it was notified by Biddeford police early Wednesday of a report of two people who disappeared at the mouth of the river, near the University of New England Campus.
The kayakers said Wednesday morning they got off the river safely earlier and didn't know the Coast Guard was searching for them until they saw it on TV.
The Guard Coast, the Saco Fire Department and the Maine Marine Patrol used boats and helicopters as part of the search.
Officials said some students were having a bonfire when a man approached them on the beach, saying he'd lost track of two kayakers. An empty kayak was recovered Wednesday, but it was unclear if it belonged to the missing kayakers.
