A company that will pay $20 million to help remedy the contamination of private wells has dropped its lawsuit against the state of Vermont over its water standards.
A spokeswoman for Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics tells Vermont Public Radio (http://bit.ly/2vceiFH) the lawsuit was dropped as part of a settlement announced Tuesday, but the company retains the right to refile it.
Vermont has more stringent standards than the federal Environmental Protection Agency for the chemical PFOA, a possible carcinogen. The company says the state has the right to set its own rules, but called for more transparency.
The chemical was used at a now-closed plant in North Bennington. It's been found in the private water wells in the area.
The company has agreed to pay to bring municipal water to some of the affected homes.
