Contractor in Boston Falling Debris Injury Hit With Violations

A metal bar fell from the roof of the five-story building that was being worked on Thursday and struck a woman in her mid-30s who was walking underneath, leaving her seriously injured

After a pedestrian was struck by debris that fell from a work site in Boston's North End Thusday, Boston building authorities issued violations and an order to stop work Friday to a contractor doing the work.

Corolla Contracting's work at the building "exceeds the terms of the permit issued by" the Inspectional Services Department, the agency said in a statement, because a deck was removed without proper permits and workers failed "to indicate the placement of lumber on the permit application."

"These violations led to the operation of an unsafe and dangerous worksite," the statement continued.

"I feel like I dodged a bullet, because I walk by that green mailbox every morning, on the way to work," said Bill Lovulo, who works nearby. "It could have been me. It could have been anybody."

Corolla had no comment when reached by NBC10 Boston.

A metal bar fell from the roof of the five-story building that was being worked on Thursday and struck a woman in her mid-30s who was walking underneath, leaving her seriously injured.

"I think they should block off, like, the whole sidewalk, so people can't walk under it, especially if things can free-fall," said Jillian Daly, who walks through the area regularly.

Along with the work site at Commercial Wharf and Atlantic Avenue, ISD ordered that six other sites being supervised by Corolla Contracting stop work pending an inspection.

Corolla Contracting of Winthrop had a history of minor safety violations, according to federal records reviewed by NBC10 Boston.
