The driver of a dump truck is dead after hitting a highway sign on Interstate 95 North in Milford Thursday morning, according to fire officials, and the highway reopened after being closed for nearly seven hours.

Officials from Milford Fire Rescue said the driver of a dump truck was thrown from his vehicle on the northbound side of I-95 between exits 40 and 41 around 7:45 a.m. and sustained extensive traumatic injuries.

Police have identified the driver of the dump truck as 63-year-old Anthony Edward Drodz, of Middletown.

A physician and an EMT who came upon the crash provided medical assistance until emergency crews arrived and the Dordz was transported to Yale Trauma Center, but died at the hospital, according to fire officials.

Another vehicle was also involved in the crash, but the driver was not seriously injured.

The highway was closed where the crash happened from around 7:45 a.m. until around 2:45 p.m.

The crash was at the Quarry Road overpass and it was also shut down. The state Department of Transportation will inspect it for safety and crews from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection responded to the scene to handle hazardous fluids.
