Crews Battle Wildfire on French Mountain in Maine

A helicopter outfitted with a water bucket was called in to drop water on the flames

Fire officials say a wildfire charred several acres of woods on French Mountain in Rome, Maine.

Maine Forest Service rangers and multiple local fire departments responded to the blaze around 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

A helicopter outfitted with a water bucket was called in to drop water on the flames. Officials say about two to three acres were burned.

Forest Ranger Specialist Kent Nelson says fire crews were challenged by the rugged, steep terrain of the mountain. The blaze was mostly contained by about 5:00 p.m.

Nelson says firefighters will likely return to the scene Friday morning.

A forest ranger was still in the process of investigating the cause of the blaze Thursday night.
