Water Main Break Prompts Evacuations, Road Closures in Back Bay

Water flowed into a major intersection Monday night, shutting down traffic and prompting evacuations in Boston's Back Bay as crews responded to a water main break.

Police and fire officials confirmed they were on the scene of a water main break at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Exeter Street. Much of the roadway in the area was underwater.

SkyRanger was over a major water main break in Boston’s Back Bay that caused water to flow into the roadway.

Aerial footage from NBC10 Boston's SkyRanger showed water flowing heavily until shortly after 10:30 p.m., when the flow appeared to slow before stopping.

The flow of water onto Commonwealth Avenue began to stop after crews responded to a water main break.

Fire officials said the water was shut off, but that it left roads with major damage.

Six buildings in the area were evacuated because of water in their basements, according to the Boston Fire Department.

Boston Water and Sewer said residents would receive temporary shelter. The city's Office of Neighborhood Services was on scene to help the people displaced, fire officials said.

Multiple streets in the vicinity of the break were shut down to traffic. Police asked drivers to seek alternate routes.
