A 55-year-old woman is dead after falling through the floor of a building that was under construction at an apartment complex in Vernon Friday morning.

Firefighters responded to the Grand Loft Apartments after the construction worker fell through the second floor, about 10 feet, to the floor below. The woman was a subcontractor.

The property owner is working with OSHA to determine how the woman fell.

The property manager and builder of the Grand Loft Apartments has released the following statement:

“The Santini Family and Team are deeply saddened by the tragic accident that occurred on our jobsite today, and our hearts are with Anita’s family. We are a close knit family of employees, contractors, and other partners, and they all mean a great deal to us. We’d like to thank the first responders for the incredible work in responding to this accident. We are working with investigators to review the circumstances which caused this tragedy to occur.”

Construction workers were told to leave the site after the accident and a helicopter responded to transport the woman to Hartford Hospital.
