Crews Extinguish Fire at MBTA Commuter Rail Facility in Somerville

Firefighters on Tuesday extinguished a fire at an MBTA Commuter Rail maintenance facility in Somerville, Massachusetts.

Fire crews from Somerville, Cambridge and Boston responded to the Somerville MBTA Commuter Rail Maintenance Facility, located at 70 Rear 3rd Ave., around 6:18 a.m. after recieving a report of a fire.

The cause of the fire remained unclear, with the Cambridge Fire Department describing the incident as a train fire that extended to the roof of the building. Meanwhile, Keolis, the operator of the Commuter Rail, said the fire started in the exhaust ventilation of the building.

It was ultimately determined by Keolis that the exhaust from the locomotive caused the fire in the ventilation system in the roof of the building.

No injuries or impact to train service had been reported.
