Crews Seek 2 Missing Swimmers in Chicopee River; 3 Rescued

Three swimmers were rescued Friday evening from a river in western Massachusetts, but two more remain missing.

Police tell NBC affiliate WWLP that crews responded to Red Bridge Road in Wilbraham just after 5 p.m. A group of nine adults and five children were at the Chicopee River when five of the adults, who were swimming, began to struggle.

Three people were taken to an area hospital after getting out of the water, according to WWLP. Two of them were still missing.

Ludlow Fire Captain Richard Machado told WWLP strong currents in the area may be due to two rivers meeting at an open dam.

Police tell WWLP all of the children involved have been reunited with family members.

State police divers and helicopters were aiding area fire crews in the search, WWLP reported.

The search is expected to resume Saturday.
