Exit Reopens After Hotel Fire Above Mass. Pike

Traffic on the Massachusetts Turnpike temporarily was impacted Tuesday afternoon after a fire broke out at a hotel above the highway in Newton.

Fire officials said firefighters responded to the blaze on the ninth floor of the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Washington Street just before 1 p.m. The hotel is partially situated over Interstate 90, and exit 17 briefly was closed on the westbound side of the highway.

There were heavy smoke conditions when firefighters arrived, and the building was evacuated.

Firefighters have since gotten the blaze under control, but the extent of damage is unclear.

No injuries were reported.

Drivers were warned about traffic delays since Washington Street westbound in the Newton Corner area was closed for crews to respond to the area, according to Newton police.

The cause is being investigated.
