A man who spent nearly 18 years in prison before his conviction for killing his wife was overturned has died, but attorneys are keeping a lawsuit against police and prosecutors alive.
John Grega died in a car crash last month in Lake Ronkonkoma, New York.
His attorneys said his conviction was based on flawed police work and unconstitutional actions by investigators.
The Rutland Herald reports attorney Ian Carleton notified the federal court he would likely be filing a substitution plaintiff.
Grega's wife, Christine, was found dead in a Dover condominium where they were vacationing in 1994. Grega was convicted of aggravated murder. In 2010, his lawyers petitioned to test DNA evidence collected from the body. He was released after DNA from an unknown man was found.
