Democratic Activist Steve Kerrigan Running for Massachusetts' 3rd Congressional Seat

If you follow politics in Massachusetts, you probably know the name Steve Kerrigan. He's been involved in the Democratic Party for decades, and now he wants to serve in Congress.

"The third district is my home," Kerrigan says. "You know, it's where I've grown up."

Kerrigan is now running to represent the third district in Congress. Which likely won't surprise the residents of his native Lancaster where Kerrigan served as selectman in the 90s before moving to DC to work for a Senator who taught him much of what he's learned about politics.

"I saw a fiercely partisan person like Ted Kennedy work hard to fight for our issues but also, when he needed to, reach across the aisle..."

By 2008, Kerrigan was working for candidate then President Barack Obama, who put Kerrigan in charge of the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

"To be the CEO of the first convention in the history of the United States that had marriage equality in the platform was a really special moment for me."

Kerrigan married Jacob Watts in October, quipping, "I do not advise doing a diner tour as a way to take a honeymoon."

It was 2014 when Kerrigan, frustrated with the political climate, decided to run for Lieutenant Governor.

"We started with no money, less than zero name recognition and by primary day, in a crowded field of folks, I won 309 out of 351 cities and towns."

The Coakley-Kerrigan ticket lost to Baker-Polito in the general election, but it did not diminish Kerrigan's desire to serve.

"I am going to go down to Washington and I am going to fight, definitely, against the backward and regressive policies of this administration and the Republicans in Congress."

Kerrigan, 46, has his own consulting firm, serves on the NARAL pro-choice board and is president of the Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund.
