Recent Murder Cases in Focus During Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Advocates in Massachusetts are hoping to highlight the dangers of domestic violence after at least six deadly cases during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Outside of Jamee Maddrey's home in Framingham sits a memorial. She was killed Sunday morning. Her boyfriend of six to eight months, Christopher McKoy, has been charged with her murder.

Maddrey is one of the six homicide victims whose deaths are linked to domestic violence so far in October in Massachusetts. This year, 18 people have died in abusive relationships, according to Voices Against Violence.

The Framingham organization is dedicated to helping save the lives of domestic violence abuse victims.

"We need to hold these offenders accountable and keep these victims safe," said Patricia Hohl, the organization's director.

Hohl says leaving abusive relationships may be the most difficult step.

"Maybe they can't leave," she said. "Maybe they're economically dependent on someone. Maybe it'll put them in more danger."

If you or someone you know has been the victim of domestic violence, you can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233. Massachusetts has collected information on local domestic violence programs here.
